This podcast contains graphic details which may be disturbing to some listeners, but some of discretion is advice. Thank you guys for tuning in to another episode of Senseless True Crime. I'm Chantel B and welcome back to the show. Today we are examining a heartbreaking and shocking case out of Orlando, Florida. This case goes beyond one single act of betrayal, one that reveals how broken trusts can slowly erode and how that erosion can build into devastating events. When control, manipulation, and jealousy collide, love can quickly become something far more dangerous than anyone could ever imagine. But what happens when love becomes possession? When jealousy turns deadly, and when manipulation becomes a weapon. But in today's case we explore how control and obsession, coupled with intimate partner violence and unchecked emotions, can lead to devastating consequences. Portia Streeter was only 30 years old. She was a mother of three, and a woman whose children were her entire world. She was building, mothering, surviving, and trying to live her life inside a world where young love turned unstable. Back in January 2024, Portia was lying in bed one night with her three young children when her life was violently taken in an instant. That night the sense of safety was broken in a moment, not by a stranger in the night, nor by some random person. What was first reported as a home invasion would soon raise questions that pointed to something far more sinister and personal. What really happened inside that apartment in the 7300 block of Woodhill Drive? And how did a reported break in become a case that went cold for more than a year? When the full picture came into focus, the details surrounding the murder are the kind that make you stop breathing for a second. The events that would turn Portia's home into the center of a deeply troubling investigation. But before we get into the gruesome details of Portia Streeter's murder, we must first honor how she lived. Portia Nikita Cheney Streeter was born in 1994. At the time of this case, Portia was 30 years old and was living in Orange County, Florida. Portia had built a life centered around her independence and responsibility. She was quietly working towards stability in a way that reflected both her past and present goals. To those who knew Portia, they described her as focused, determined, and deeply committed to building something of her own. Portia was a woman redefining life on her own terms. Now Portia ran a small hairdressing business out of her apartment on Woodhill Park Drive. And she grew that business one client at a time. Through consistency and trust. Her clients respected her deeply, and many of them kept returning, not just for her skills. Portia created the perfect environment for her clients. They often walked in one way, but by the time Portia was done with their hair, they left feeling completely transformed. The apartment where Portia did hair served more than one purpose. Not only was this her workplace, but it was also her safe space. This was a place where she could remain close to her three children while earning a living she could be proud of. Now that setup allowed her to stay present, but also to balance work and motherhood in a way that made sense for her life. But at the center of Portia's world were her three children. Her children range in ages of ten, two, and a one year old baby. Portia's children were her priority in every sense of the word. And she understood what it meant to struggle, and she carried that awareness into how she raised them. Portia wanted more out of life for her children, more security, more opportunities, and a different kind of future. But every decision she made was tied to the goal of securing a bright future for her babies. Portia was determined to give her kids the life she never had. There was a sense that Portia was building something steady, something meaningful. She had plans to expand her business beyond that small setup in her apartment. Portia wanted to open her very own salon one day. But at the same time, Portia looked forward to the long term milestones in her children's lives, watching them grow, succeed, and hopefully one day build lives of their own. But behind that progress, there was a relationship that continued to complicate Portia's life. She had been involved for years with Sean Raines Jr., the father of her three children. Now the two had known each other since high school, but what had once started off as young love had gradually shifted into something toxic. Over time, their connection became marked by conflict, toxicity, infidelity, and domestic violence rather than stability. Portia wanted a way out of this dynamic. Sean didn't live in the apartment full time with Portia and her children, but he remained a constant presence, moving in and out of both Portia's life and the children's lives. But as the situation became more difficult, Portia began trying to establish clear boundaries, seeking control over her own space, her finances and her future. She was taking steps to move forward without Sean, unaware that these changes would soon set the stage for what was to come. Portia desperately wanted better for herself and for her children, and in twenty twenty four, she mustered up the courage to end the relationship with Sean. The ending of the relationship had become a battlefield, where arguments ensued over custody and visitation arrangements. There was a dispute over money owed, but also infidelity and control. These were all prominent factors and hotbed triggers in their relationship. Portia wanted control over her own life, and she started to establish boundaries with Sean. No more in and out of her life or the children. Portia was making her own money with her beautician business, and her business was increasing, and she no longer needed to depend on Sean financially. She was standing her ground, standing ten toes down on her principles, and was no longer accepting less than what she deserved. And this new lease on life for Portia is exactly what caused someone to so savagely take her life. Sean wasn't happy about Portia's newfound freedom or her new lease on life. Portia wanted to focus on herself and her kids' happiness, and she wanted to leave Sean behind her. Sean, however, wanted custody of the children, and he believed that Portia was hiding money from him. Sean believed that Portia was in a new relationship, and this set him off. A friend of Portia's revealed shocking claims just days before the incident. There was evidence in the form of photos showing Portia with bruises, confirming a violent confrontation had taken place with Sean. This reflected their long history of domestic abuse. But despite this, Portia remained steadfast. She was armed with proof of the violence she endured. Portia was determined to maintain primary custody of her three children. Her intense desire to ensure her children's safety would ultimately cost her her life. On the night of Saturday, january thirteenth, 2024, around 9 30 PM, Portia Streeter was inside her apartment. She was in her master bedroom with her three children. Her children were ages ten, two, and she had a one year old baby. All four of them were in the same bed. Just as they did every night at bedtime. What was meant to be a quiet evening, a routine moment, a mother with her children settling in for the night. Moments like this was supposed to be the safest part of the day, the most precious part of motherhood. But that night that sense of safety was broken. The fear was unimaginable as the bedroom door was suddenly kicked in. There was no warning, no time to react. In an instant, the calm inside that bedroom turned into complete chaos. As Portia lie in bed beside her children, gunfire erupted, and she was shot ten times, while her ten year old son was kicked in the head by the assailant. And her boyfriend, Sean Raines Jr., was in the apartment, and he was subsequently shot in the arm by the intruder. Sean managed to make the initial 911 call. Now he called 911 reporting a break in and a shooting inside the residence. When deputies arrived, they found Portia unresponsive inside the bedroom. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Her three children, thankfully, were unharmed, but they had been right there beside her during the shooting, witnessing everything as it unfolded. The children were traumatized, stricken with grief, but as officers began gathering more information, Sean Range Jr. can be heard instructing Portia to keep fighting after she took up her last breath. When authorities questioned Sean, he told them that an unknown intruder forced his way into the apartment. He said that there had been a struggle between himself and the intruder, and during that struggle, the intruder opened fire before fleeing the scene. Now he repeated that version of events to first responders, and he explained that he had come to check on his family that day when the situation unfolded. Sean had described the scene as a sudden attack, that he and Portia had been ambushed, and that this was a home invasion. He also told officers that he had been shot in the arm during the incident, and he was treated at the scene with non life threatening injuries. But at that point based on his account, the situation was initially treated as a possible break in gone wrong. Police believed that this was an act of violence carried out by someone unknown. When the word spread that Portia Streeter had been brutally murdered in her apartment, lying next to her three children, the community was outrage. Friends of Portia spoke on her behalf. They also talked about the kind person that she was, but also how she made people feel seen through her hair care business. Let's take a listen.

Portia Streeter was gotten killed while she was asleep with her own children. Her friends are still grappling with the loss.

SPEAKER_08

She was a god young woman. You know, you got to argue with the council. And I see about the picture that you want.

SPEAKER_05

They found that story unfathomable.

SPEAKER_08

How dare you pull someone's life away from the how dare you do God's job? How dare you show someone of their future? How dare you ensure that three beautiful kids of their mother?

SPEAKER_01

The Orange County Sheriff's Office moved quickly to piece together what really happened that night. But as investigators began reviewing evidence, Sean's story didn't add up. His story began to completely fall apart. Now the first red flag came from the timeline. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots around 9 30 PM. This was the time that Portia was believed to have been killed. But Sean did not call 911 until eleven thirty that night. This was a two hour gap. Two full hours where three small children remain inside that apartment with their mother dead. No immediate call for help. As investigators continued their work, they turn their attention to the scene itself. What they found raised even more questions. There was no clear evidence of force entry. The front door or other entry points did not show damage consistent with a break-in. There were no signs that an unknown intruder had forced their way inside. That detail alone directly contradicted the story Sean had given to authorities. Also inside the apartment, the crime scene told a different story as well. The crime scene did not reflect the type of chaos expected from a violent home invasion, but instead the layout and condition of the bedroom suggested something more controlled. There were no clear signs of a struggle that matched Sean's account. Sean said that he had a violent struggle with the intruder. However, there was no clear signs that a fight had taken place in that apartment. To investigators this pointed less towards a random act and more towards something deliberate. But there was another detail that stood out. After Portia had been shot multiple times in front of her children, there was no immediate attempt to get help. But after Sean himself suffered a single gunshot wound to the arm, his actions were totally different. But according to investigators, Sean ran through the apartment complex, knocking on doors and seeking help. Now that contrast between his response to Portia's condition and his own injuries raised serious concerns. But then investigators uncovered surveillance footage from around the apartment complex. This became a turning point in the investigation. The surveillance footage showed a man identified as Benjamin Garmin Jr., which was Sean's twenty six year old cousin arriving at the location, but then later running from the apartment shortly after the gunshots were heard. The footage also placed him with Sean before the incident actually happened. Now that connection shifted the direction of the investigation entirely. From there, police began to piece together a theory that was difficult to ignore. They believed that Sean had orchestrated the murder. According to investigators, Sean had arranged for his cousin, Benjamin, to come to that apartment, stage a break-in by kicking in the bedroom door, and carrying out the shooting. To make the break-in look more real, Garmin allegedly shot Sean in the arm before fleeing that apartment. The investigators supported this theory through forensic analysis, surveillance footage from the apartment, phone records and financial records, but the key point was the witness accounts that align with the timeline that the gunshots were heard. So as investigators built their case, they concluded that the motive centered on control. Sean wanted custody of the children, and he believed that Portia was withholding money from him. When she refused and continued setting boundaries for herself. What investigators believe was that Sean made the decision to remove Portia from the situation entirely. Portia was killed in the most senseless and savage act of violence, being shot ten times in her bed, right next to her three children. What detectives did was continue building the case with precision, working through every detail. They gathered evidence, they interviewed witnesses who lived inside the complex, and they carefully analyzed hours of surveillance footage. Piece by piece, the timeline became clearer. The focus remained on connecting every element of what was said, what was seen, and what could actually be proven. In April 2025, more than a year after Portia was killed, that work led to a major development. Both men were taken into custody. Sean Range Jr. was arrested and charged with first degree murder, and his cousin, 26-year-old Benjamin Garmin Jr., was arrested and charged with first degree murder for carrying out the shooting. Let's take a listen.

SPEAKER_02

Sean Raider and Portice Reader had a psychophysically abusive relationship. They argued over their three children and infidelity. And even at one point, according to Raider, a$20,000 loan of some sort that portion he says had these two orchids. And eventually, detectives say he decided to kill her. On December 13th of last year, a woman named Porsche Street was shot ten times while she was in bed with her three children at this Orange County apartment complex. Detectives now say the father of her kids, John Range Jr., worked together with his cousin, Benjamin Carmen Jr. to kill her and disguise the crime as a home invasion. That news has been spreading through the apartment complex today. It was information from neighbors that helped detectives make the arrest more than a year later. Someone in a nearby apartment unit told deputies they'd heard around half a dozen gunshots. That was around 9.30 in the morning. Two full hours before detectives A. The family asked not to be identified in the story. Originally, Range told detective someone had forced their way into the apartment demanding money, then went into the bedroom, kicked his 10-year-old son in the head, and started shooting Streeter in the head. The detective say they didn't find evidence of several gunshots range that happened in the apartment, and they say they found it odd that despite range describing a fight between him and the suspect, the shooter only hit Streeter. A mountain of video surveillance pokes a major holes in the story, too. We're going to be talking a lot more about that video surveillance. Who was where at what times and what was discussed? That's all tonight at six.

SPEAKER_01

When investigators reveal that after the homicide, they searched Garmin's residence and they recovered firearms. Now at the time, he had already been held outside the county on federal weapons charges that he had previously pleaded guilty to. Because he was a convicted felon, he was not legally allowed to possess those weapons. Federal prosecutors moved forward with those charges first, securing custody before the murder charges were formally brought at the county level. Now legal experts quickly weighed in on the case, and one attorney described the situation as extremely serious, pointing to the number of shots fired. The allegation that Portia was shot ten times suggested a level of intent that would be difficult to challenge in court. With a case like this, claims such as self-defense would not align with the evidence presented. Beyond the charges and the legal process, the attention returned to those left behind. Portia's three children, ten years old, two years old, and a one year old baby were all in the room when the murder happened. Physically they were unharmed, and not a single bullet struck them. This was something that investigators described as nothing short of a miracle. However, the reality of what those children witnessed remained. They were present in that moment, seeing their mother brutally murdered, taken from them, and they were unable to understand or stop what was unfolding. That impact is something that those children will carry with them long after the case moves through the court process. There isn't a specific date that has been assigned for Sean or Benjamin Garmin. While key court appearances have taken place, the case has not moved to the full trial phase. Garmin's arrangement was scheduled for January twenty sixth, two thousand twenty six, and range had a court appearance date set for April eighth, two thousand twenty five. But there has been no official start date for trial. The case remains in the pretrial phase. Both men have been formally charged with first degree murder, and court proceedings are still ongoing. This includes hearings, motions, and the review of evidence as both sides prepare for trial. Let's take a listen.

SPEAKER_06

And her boyfriend, 32-year-old Son Range Jr., who was shot in his upper arm. A year and so change later, the Orange County Sheriff's Office arrested Range for the killing, saying he orchestrated the whole thing along with Benjamin Garmin, making it all look like a home invasion. We're now in a situation where you are looking at life in prison. Criminal defense attorney Trey Flynn, who's unassociated with the case, says the brutal nature of the killing elevates it.

SPEAKER_07

This is a very, very, very serious crime. In this situation, um, Mr. Garmin is alleged to have shot somebody not just one time but ten times. So what does that mean? That means there's an aggravation there in this sort of homicide case. You're not going to be able to claim self-defense in this sort of situation.

SPEAKER_06

This new mugshot of Garmin was taken when he was transferred to Orange County custody. He was previously being held out of county on federal weapons charges to which he pled guilty.

SPEAKER_07

They executed the search warrants on a residence that he was at um after the uh homicide took place. During that time, they located firearms in the residence, and the federal uh prosecutor stalled a uh as a convicted felon as somebody possessing firearms. This is a case that is of interest to us.

SPEAKER_06

Investigators allege range and Garmin set up the home invasion killing because of a custody dispute between Range and Streeter over their shared children. And because Range said Streeter was hiding money from him. David Jones, West 2 News.

SPEAKER_09

Garmin's arraignment is scheduled for January 26th. We have reached out to the state attorney's office for an update on Range. Of course, we will let you know as soon as we hear back.

SPEAKER_01

First degree murder charges in Florida carry serious legal weight. For prosecutors, this means that they must prove that the act was planned, but also intentional, and that the murder was carried out with clear purpose. The burden of proof is to establish the level of intent beyond a reasonable doubt, using the evidence gathered during the investigation, the financial records, their surveillance footage clearly showing Sean and his cousin both being at that apartment at the same time that the murder happened. But if either or both men are convicted, the penalties could be severe because under Florida law, first degree murder can result in life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. And in most cases, depending on how prosecutors pursue the charges and the circumstances that are presented in court, the death penalty may also be considered. Because there are two individuals who are involved. The law also examines each person's role in the murder. What investigators and prosecutors look at was the plan act and who actually carried it out. That distinction becomes important in how the case is argued in court. But it does not necessarily reduce responsibility. Because even if one person did not physically carry out the act, they can still be held equally responsible if they were involved in planning or facilitating the murder. As the case moves forward, those legal questions of intent, role, and responsibility will be central to what happens next. In the days following the arrest, Portia's family began speaking publicly about who she was. Her cousin shared a message that didn't rely on complicated words. She described Portia as a good mother, someone who chose to work from home so she could stay close to her children, prioritizing them, someone who was trying to build something real. She spoke about the life Portia was creating from a small business owner growing her business step by step to the home that she was creating centered around her children, to the type of woman she was, trying to hold things together, even while dealing with a relationship that had long since stopped being safe from the outside. This may have looked like she was managing, but behind it she was caring more than most people could see. Portia's family said that she was trying to move forward. She was setting boundaries, she was making decisions for herself and working towards a bright future. But she never got the chance to fully step into that life. The opportunity to leave that situation behind was taken from her before she could fully reach it. Her three children were the only ones who survived that night. The youngest, the one year old, will grow up with no memory of her face or her voice, but the older children will carry memory shaped by that moment, something no child should have to experience or remember. While her children were not physically harmed, what they witness will remain with them in ways that are difficult to even measure. For those who knew Portia, the focus has remained on remembering her for who she was and not how her life ended. She was a mother, she was a provider. She was a woman building something with intention and care. She was a mother who showed up for her children every single day. Her life mattered. Her life had value beyond her murder. To those who loved her, the loss is not about just what happened. The loss is everything that she was still meant to become. The local community was rocked by the news of Portia's murder. Portia was known as a talented beautician who uplifted many through her work. There was a candlelight visual held in front of her at Woodhill Park residents. There were advocacy groups for domestic violence survivors who cited her case as a poignant reminder of the dangers of a toxic relationship. Friends and family have established a trust fund to support Porsche's three children. They want to ensure that they receive the education and care that Porsche so desperately wanted to provide for them. Porsche's legacy continues through the Porsche's Light Foundation, which provides resources and safe havens for women that are seeking to leave abusive situations. Portia Streeter was a thirty-year-old mother of three. She was a woman living to provide stability for her children. We're talking about a mother whose children should have been able to wake up to her voice, her touch, her kisses, her routine, her presence, who should have had more birthdays with her babies, more mornings, and more time to raise her children to become whoever she was still becoming. A young woman was killed. Three children left alone in this world without their mother. And when we talk about the horrific scene, a stage scene, a false story, this was planned, this was calculated, this was deception. And Portia was entangled with a man whose jealousy, control, and manipulation got the better of him. When she recognized her own worth and walked away. And in the end, it cost her her life. And this is one of the cruelest things about cases like this. When a woman gets fed up, when she sees that things aren't getting better, when she chooses herself, the most dangerous part of any relationship is when that woman chooses to walk away. What upsets me about this case the most is not just the brutality. This woman was shot ten times while her babies lay next to her. And part of that plot was that Garmin would break down that door and kick the 10-year-old son in the head. And then Sean performing with this plot where his own cousin shot him in the arm to make this story believable. More than a year of investigations working to pull the truth out of Sean. This case is just not about a heinous murder. It's about the danger of a person who can have kids with you, lay with you, live with you on and off, smile with you in public, and create terror in private. This is something that is often not even discussed. The public smiles, the pictures on social media, the family pictures, the relationship goals shown to everybody online. But in private is a terror that most people don't understand. It is about the way manipulation can confuse the people who are around the victim. But this is about how a woman can be living inside a relationship that people on the outside can call messy while she is actually living inside escalating danger. And it is also about how children can become silent witnesses to the consequences of this danger. You have three children, two who will possibly remember what happened that night, and one who will never remember his mother's voice, his mother's scent, his mother's love. Because that was taken away by the father that helped bring them in to this world. And that is trifling in and of itself. The lie, the precision, the planning that goes into covering up this crime, the warning signs, the fear, the control, the bruises that no one fully saw, and the danger that was growing long before this murder happened. Reports describe Portia and Sean's relationship as severely toxic with allegations of intimate partner violence and infidelity. What investigators also reported was that they received photos from a friend of Portia that showed that she had been beaten by Sean days before she was killed. Where was Portia's help? Where was her way out? She tried to find her way out. But Portia deserved safety. She deserved peace. She deserved to raise her children without fear. She deserved a life beyond someone else's jealousy, control, fragile ego, someone's rage, and someone who needed to control the outcome of her life. And I want to pause here because we have to stop treating domestic violence like it only becomes serious when someone dies. Domestic violence becomes serious when the relationship becomes violent. The red flags matter, but the signs matter long before the obituary is written. The fear matters before the murder. The bruises matter before the plot plays out. The threats, the control, the stalking, the intimidation, the I'm sorry, this won't happen again. The force explanations. The emotional whiplash. It all matters to victims of domestic violence. Because by the time a woman is gone, people always want to ask, why didn't she leave? Why did she still let him around? Why was he still in the home? Why didn't someone know? But let me challenge you to a better question. Why do so many abusers believe that they are entitled to someone else's life? Here's another question. Why are they entitled to control? Why are they entitled to a woman's body, her loyalty, her money, her children, her silence, and ultimately her life. Because when someone sees a partner as property, they do not respond to boundaries like a healthy person does. They respond like something is being taken from them. And in Portia's case, what followed was a plan so cold, so selfish, and so devastating that it's hard to sit with. The motive for the murder involved custody, money, the belief that Portia was moving on with someone else. Sean believed that Portia was hiding money from him. Money that she had worked hard for. Money that she used to build stability for her children. He felt that he was entitled to it. And there it is again. Control, not love. Not heartbreak. Not a man who could simply not handle the end of a relationship, but control. But when we talk about a woman being shot ten times while her babies laid next to her, there is a cold and calculated mindset that can orchestrate something like this. Not only did you not care that you murdered the mother of your three children, you also didn't care about the trauma that your three children will have to live through because of your actions and the fact that you had your cousin break into this apartment, kick your 10-year-old son in the head, and shoot your children's mother ten times, murdering her in cold blood. I do not understand why this had to happen. Portia deserved peace. She deserved safety. She deserved to be here raising her children. And yet, one act, one savage act, and she is gone. And her children's lives have been forever changed by someone's selfishness. It takes a cold hearted bastard to plan this, manipulate the situation, and actually go through with this plan, knowing good and damn well that your babies, your very own babies, that You created and brought into this world is lying next to their mother that you had murdered. I hope and pray that both of you never see the light of day. What you have robbed these children of is insurmountable grief. You've robbed them of holidays without their mother, birthdays without their mother, graduations without their mother, a life of understanding what happened to their mother and why. These kids will always have a hole in their heart because of what their father did. The realization is evil doesn't always come through the door. Sometimes it's right there next to you. And that is the saddest part. Someone Portia loved, trusted, spent years with, had kids with, turned around, and ended her life. Make it make sense. My heart goes out to Portia's children. My God. I pray for their mind. I pray that they grow up knowing how much their mother loved them. How much she worked hard to protect them. How much she wanted them to have a better life. And she chose better. And her life was ended because she wanted better. My heart bleeds for her family. To know the toxicity of the relationship she was in, and no one could save her. My heart bleeds for Portia. The freedom that comes from knowing I can move forward, I can have a good life. And then having that taken from you, that is unimaginable. Portia Streeter, may your sweet and beautiful soul forever rest in peace.
