S7:E4: The Senseless Disappearance of Mitrice Richardson (24) “Released into Darkness”

Season 7 Episode 4

Malibu, California —In September 2009, 24-year-old Mitrice Richardson was arrested by the Lost Hills Sheriff's Department after being unable to pay a dinner bill at a high-end Malibu restaurant. Despite family concerns about her mental state, deputies released her alone in the dead of night, without her phone, wallet, or car, into the Santa Monica Mountains. She was never heard from again.

For nearly a year, her family searched, facing dismissive authorities, and unfounded sightings. In August 2010, her skeletal remains were found in Malibu Creek State Park. The discovery deepened the mystery, with authorities widely criticized for mishandling the remains and the investigation. The truth surrounding her death remains clouded by official missteps and lack of transparency.

This is not just the story of a disappearance. It’s the story of gross negligence. It’s the story of a system that failed a young woman in crisis.  In this episode, we walk step by step into the last known hours of Mitrice Richardson’s life and the investigation that left this case a total mystery even to this very day.
